In December 2019, the total number of pigs in the UK reached 3.78 million. This is the highest figure for December in the last 12 years.
According to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture (Defra), as of December 1, 2019, there were 3.78 million pigs in Britain, up 2.7% from December 1, 2018 . The last livestock of these farm animals in the country reached that level in 2007.
However, last year in the UK the number of breeding pigs decreased by 1% compared to 2018. There was also a marked decrease in the number of sows (-12% per year). At the same time, the number of pigs for fattening increased by 3% to 3.37 million head.
Spain is another European country that has seen a significant increase in the number of pigs in 2019. Other major EU producing countries, such as Germany and France, saw a decrease in the livestock population of these farms last year.
